Inside Out

Chicago, 2017

Exhibition with Kuehn Malvezzi for the Chicago Architecture Biennial. Curated by Sharon Johnston and Mark Lee

In the Chicago Tribune Competition of 1922, America meets Europe. Even more so, realism meets idealism. If Hood’s Tribune Tower epitomizes the tall office building beyond Prairie heroism, Loos’ competition entry projects the corporate tower beyond European modernism. Hood differs from Wright as much as Loos differs from Hilberseimer. Today, the transatlantic realists Hood and Loos finally meet. Their encounter takes place at the historical site, witnessed by the real Chicago context and influenced by two ideal European counterparts who haven’t seen the light of day.
